A rare 1940s steel cushion Rolex Oyster watch, ref 3139, with faceted bezel.
A 1941, stainless steel cushion vintage Rolex Oyster watch. The case measures 30 x 38mm (including lugs) with 17mm lug size and Rolex Oyster patent crown. The case is signed Oyster Watch Company, Geneva Swiss, reference 3139 and numbered the back, dating to 1941. The manual wind movement is signed Rolex , Swiss Made, numbered, with 17 Rubis and Patented Superbalance*. The champagne dial has black Arabic numerals, with centre sweep seconds and fine blued steel ‘lumed’ hands. The dial is signed Rolex Oyster above the centre.
*The movement incorporates the Rolex ‘Superbalance’, first patented in 1935 under Swiss Patent number 188077. The ‘Superbalance’ was designed by Rolex to be more streamlined than the traditional compensation balances and was also heavier to help improve accuracy.
