A rare, early stainless steel Rolex Oyster watch, from the 1930s, with a superb fine quality high jewelled movement!
A 1937, stainless steel cushion vintage Rolex Oyster watch. The case measures 32 x 38mm (including lugs), with 16mm lugs and Oyster Patent winding crown. The case is signed Oyster Watch Company, Geneva-Suisse, with Great Britain Patents and numbered to the back. The manual wind, fine quality, Rolex movement is signed Rolex, Swiss Made with 17 jewels. The silvered dial has black Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and fine blued steel ‘batons etroits’ hands. The dial is signed Rolex Oyster above the centre.
This is an incredibly rare early stainless steel Rolex Oyster watch, as worn by Sir Malcolm Campbell when he set his land speed record at Daytona Beach in 1935! The start of the Rolex Sports watches!
Interestingly, the case design strongly resembles the early Panerai watches, which were of course manufactured by Rolex since Panerai was founded as an instrument manufacturer rather than watchmaker. Rolex made all the original Panerai watches for the Royal Italian Navy from in 1936 to 1956!
